About this site

Tibet as a place: the plateau, how people have lived on it, and how it came to be recorded.

ProTibet is written as a set of short entries, each one about a single material fact: a crop, an animal, a wall, a pigment, a script, an instrument. Almost everything on it follows from altitude — the plateau averages more than four thousand metres, and the crop that ripens there, the animal that can work there and the wall that stands there are all answers to that one number.

There are six sections and twenty-four entries. Every entry is one thing altitude decided.

The inward lean is structural: a thick base narrowing as it rises keeps a mass wall standing without a frame.ProTibet picture library
